N.M. Bodecker (1922-1988) was born in Denmark and studied at the School of Architecture and the School of Applied Arts in Copenhagen. He came to the United States in 1952, where he worked as an illustrator and “after hours” created his own stories and poetry. Miss Jaster’s Garden, originally published in 1972, was the first story both written and illustrated by Mr. Bodecker. He is perhaps best known for his illustrations of Edward Eager’s children’s fantasy novels, including Half Magic and Knight’s Castle. The recipient of numerous awards, Mr. Bodecker wrote fifteen books and illustrated over forty before his death in 1988.
