Stefanie Krauss was born in 1905 in Budapest, daughter of noted Jewish scholar, historian and philologist, Samuel Krauss. Her family moved to Vienna in 1906 where she grew up and later studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. After graduation she worked in the advertising industry and in 1933 married painter Franz Lerch, who often used her as a model. She and her husband were forced to emigrate to the United States before WWII. They settled in New York, where Steffie became a graphic artist in advertising, designed greeting cards and also illustrated children’s books. She died in 1996 in New York City.
This painting by Franz Lerch is titled Self-portrait with Wife, 1934.
