One day in 1956 a Mrs. Diggory Venn, Director of the Radcliffe Publishing Program, called and asked me if I’d be interested in illustrating some unusual light verses by Frederick Winsor for the Atlantic Monthly.
The first sketches brought Fred Winsor to my house and began an author-illustrator lark which made both of us happy. His delightful verses created exactly the right world for my peculiar drawings. He felt the same way. It was all surprising, a great stroke of luck. We always agreed. He never suggested or even seemed to think of changes to my drawings. I never dreamed of tinkering with his verse. We just enjoyed this coincidence of worlds together.
