Friso Henstra was born in Amsterdam in 1928, and died there at the age of 85. He studied drawing and sculpting at the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, becoming an illustrator and comic artist. During the 1960s he began illustrating children’s books and with his quirky style went on to win the prestigious Golden Apple Award at the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava for The Practical Princess and for Forgetful Fred. He won the Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators for The Round Sultan and the Straight Answer.
